Frankincense === 乳香

In ancient Chinese book of herbs is mentioned many times. And now medical have for makan one and apply one but the resin they use is very poor quality.


In Chinese:

为橄榄科植物乳香树Boswellia carterii Birdw及其同属植物皮部渗出的树脂。主产于非洲索马里、埃塞俄比亚等地。野生或栽培。春夏季采收。将树干的皮部由下向上顺序切伤，使树脂渗出，数天后凝成固体，即可采收。可打碎生用，内服多炒用。

       【药性】辛、苦，温。归心、肝、脾经。
       【功效】活血行气止痛，消肿生肌。
       【应用】
       1．跌打损伤、疮疡痈肿。乳香辛香走窜，入心、肝经。味苦通泄入血，既能散瘀止痛，又能活血消痈，祛腐生肌，为外伤科要药。治跌打损伤，常配没药、血竭、红花等药同用，如七厘散（《良方集液》）；配没药、金银花、白芷、穿山甲等，可治疮疡肿毒初起，红肿热痛，如仙方活命饮（《校注妇人大全良方》）；治痈疽、瘰疬、痰核，肿块坚硬不消，可配没药、麝香、雄黄以解毒消痈散结，如醒消丸（《外科全生集》）；治疮疡溃破，久不收口，常配没药研末外用以生肌敛疮，如海浮散（《疮疡经验全书》）。

【现代研究】
       1．化学成分：主要含有树脂、树胶和挥发油。树脂的主要成分为游离α，β-乳香酸，结合乳香酸，乳香树脂烃；树胶主要成分为阿糖酸的钙盐和镁盐，西黄芪胶粘素；挥发油含蒎烯、α，β-水芹烯等。

       2．药理作用：乳香有镇痛、消炎、升高白细胞的作用，并能加速炎症渗出排泄，促进伤口愈合；所含蒎烯有祛痰作用；乳香能明显减轻阿司匹林、保泰松、利血平所致胃粘膜损伤及应激性粘膜损伤，减低幽门结扎性溃疡指数及胃液游离酸度。

       3．临床研究：共治125例乳腺增生病。经治2-6个月后，痊愈78例，显效23例，有效13例，无效11例。总有效率91.2%（北京医科大学学报，1988，20（4）：309）。以乳香、没药、鳖甲、五灵脂组成的中药浓缩剂，浸湿数层纱布，热敷于肝区，与加热的石蜡，外加毛毯保温，每次半小时，每日1次，治疗32例肝炎后肝区疼痛。结果痊愈21例，显效6例，进步3例，疗效不显著2例（江苏中医，1962，（8）：39）。3．3．）。(Last time no oil this method troublesome, now have frankincense oil direct apply can le 以乳香、没药、冰片共研细末，加蜂蜜调成糊状，外涂，每天1次，共治40余例烧烫伤患者。结果对Ⅰ-Ⅱ度烧烫伤，一般5-10天可愈，稍重者20天内痊愈。对Ⅲ度烧伤效果不理想（新中医，1985，（1）：14）。



Harvesting Frankincense is quite a time consuming process. A deep incision is made into the trunk (actually several incisions per tree, although according to recent research more than 5 incisions causes considerable stress to the trees.) and a small piece of bark next to it is removed.

This wounding causes the tree to 'bleed' a milky white substance that seals and heals the wound and prevents infection. After three months the resin has hardened enough to be scraped off the trunk. However, to obtain the best quality Frankincense the process of wounding is repeated 3 times and only the resin collected from the third harvest is considered to be of superior quality.

 The solid resin is sorted into various qualities, some as tears, and some as grains of different colour and sizes. The quality is determined by the degree of opacity.


Resin destined for distillation is shipped off while still slightly sticky on the inside, which denotes high concentration of volatile oil.


Medicinal Usages


A) Frankincense was thought to improve memory and dispel lethargy.
B) Market now have pills with frankincense : Modern research has focused on Frankincense' anti-inflammatory properties, particularly in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and soft tissue rheumatism for which it appears to be extremely useful. Other effective treatments include extracts administered for gastro-intestinal diseases such as colitis and Crohn's disease
C) Cancer hope
But immunologist Mahmoud Suhail is hoping to open a new chapter in the history of frankincense.
Scientists have observed that there is some agent within frankincense which stops cancer spreading, and which induces cancerous cells to close themselves down. He is trying to find out what this is.

"Cancer starts when the DNA code within the cell's nucleus becomes corrupted," he says. "It seems frankincense has a re-set function. It can tell the cell what the right DNA code should be.
"Frankincense separates the 'brain' of the cancerous cell - the nucleus - from the 'body' - the cytoplasm, and closes down the nucleus to stop it reproducing corrupted DNA codes."
Working with frankincense could revolutionise the treatment of cancer. Currently, with chemotherapy, doctors blast the area around a tumour to kill the cancer, but that also kills healthy cells, and weakens the patient. Treatment with frankincense could eradicate the cancerous cells alone and let the others live.
The task now is to isolate the agent within frankincense which, apparently, works this wonder. Some ingredients of frankincense are allergenic, so you cannot give a patient the whole thing.

3. Reduces Brain Fog- It seems that lots of people today complain that their brain seems sluggish. Since frankincense is high is sesquiterpenes, it crosses the blood brain barrier and therefore reduces these symptoms. Put a couple drops on your temples and in your hands. Cup hands over your nose and inhale deeply.
